Abstract:Hawthorne is one of the most famous writers in the nineteenth century in the United States. His excellent symbolism writing technique makes him a target many writers to follow. The Minister’s Black Veil is one of his novels showing his style. Firstly, this dissertation introduces what symbolism is and then analyzes the symbolism in this novel with the symbolism theories of Charles Chadwick. This dissertation applies three symbolism theories of Charles Chadwick to analyze Hawthorne’s The Minister’s Black Veil. The symbolism of secret sin, the relationship between reality and creature, and the word “Hooper” are the three parts showing symbolic functions.

　　　There are many researches about Hawthorne’s symbolism, but most of them focus on the novel The Scarlet Letter. The research on The Minister’s Black Veil from the perspective of symbolism is rare. Through the analysis of the typical symbolism in the novel, it can deepen the understanding of Hawthorne’s splendid symbolism.

摘要:霍桑是美國十九世紀最偉大的文學家之一，他高超的象征主義寫作手法使他成為眾多文學家仿效的對象?！督涕L的黑面紗》是他其中的一部著名小說。本論文首先介紹什么是象征主義，然后從查爾斯·查德維克的書中選取三個理論來分析小說的三個部分：1.隱秘之罪的象征主義；2.象征主義中現實與創造物的關系；3.“Hooper”一詞的象征主義。

　　　對于霍桑的象征主義的相關研究有很多，但大多數都是針對《紅字》這部小說展開，而針對《教長的黑面紗》展開的研究則不多。對本論文的意義在于從這篇小說去進行分析，概括霍桑的象征主義，從而加深人們對霍桑的象征主義的理解。

　　　At the end of the 19th century, some foreign literature was introduced into China. In 1915, Chen Duxiu introduced symbolism indistinctly in his work Xian Dai Wen Xue Shi (1915: 23-28) and that seems the earliest introduction of Symbolism in China. Compared with Europe and America, the history of symbolism in China’s literature is not long and the impact of symbolism is not much huge so that many readers knew little about it (袁可嘉 2003). With the development of our country, more and more chances are available to communicate with foreigners. Hawthorne is one of the most important writers in the United States came into the readers’ attention. Knowing more about Hawthorne and his writing skills is good for us to understand American culture.

　　　The definition of symbolism in some research papers, according to their needs, was cited from different professors. Other symbolism writing techniques of Hawthorne and numbers of images in the book The Minister’s Black Veil still need further study.
